Fall 2011 School of the Arts Schedule
Click here to download the registration form
This fall the Athenaeum’s School of the Arts celebrates its 25th Anniversary. We have been offering classes in drawing, painting, sculpting, flower arranging and even the occasional music class since 1986! We celebrate the occasion with an exhibition of seven members of our art school faculty from the early years, who are still teaching for us. We invite students and Athenaeum members to come and see the work of the master teachers and take their classes this fall! Besides our original faculty we also introduce a new teacher this session, Linda Luisi, who will introduce us to Mindfulness Art and Depth and Dimension. No matter what your age or the level of your skills, we welcome you and have the right class for you.
We look forward to seeing you at the School of the Arts!
Cornelia Feye
School of the Arts and Arts Education Director
Three faculty members of the Athenaeum’s School of the Arts will show their work at Girard Gourmet this fall. Award-winning painter and printmaker Neil Shigley shows his portraits and paintings until September 23, to be followed by Carol Curtis, who will exhibit her delicate watercolors through November. Irina Gronborg's intricate drawings will be on view through December and into the New Year. Drink a cup of coffee and enjoy the ambiance and the food. Girard Gourmet is located at 7838 Girard Avenue, just up the street from the Athenaeum, and is open Monday through Saturday, from 7 AM to 8 PM, and on Sundays from 7 AM to 7 AM.

Carol Curtis
The first student exhibition of the Athenaeum’s School of the Arts took place in 1994. We are continuing this tradition this December. Students have an opportunity to exhibit what they have accomplished in 2011 and sell their work. They also find out about other classes and maybe other media and techniques to explore. Faculty and students can meet with friends and Athenaeum members at the opening on Thursday, December 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM The work will be on display from December 2 through December 11, from 11 AM to 3 PM, daily. Students can drop off one work per person on Monday, November 28, between 8:30 AM and 4 PM. Pickup is on Monday, December 12, between 8:30 AM and 4 PM.
25th Anniversary of the School of the Arts
Since November 1986 the Athenaeum's School of the Arts has been offered 2,590 classes taught by 222 teachers to more than 25,000 students. Seven of our original instructors from the first 15 years of the school are still teaching for us. They are Irina Gronborg, Ken Goldman, Jean Shen, Elaine Harvey, France-Marie Haeger, Sibyl Rubottom, and Thia Nevius. We celebrate their loyalty and dedication with an exhibition of their work in the Athenaeum's Rotunda Gallery from November 12 until December 31. We hope former and future students will use this opportunity to see the skill and variety of their expertise. This faculty exhibition will open on Friday, November 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Athenaeum in La Jolla.

Observe the beauty of nature by drawing directly from living plants and flowers. We will observe and carefully draw complex and elegant contours, and pay attention to significant botanical structures. The course will begin with studies of flower structure in line. We will develop a traditional botanical illustration and continue with a full color rendering. Classes will include demonstrations, discussions and examples of botanical art. Irina will share her adventures as an illustrator of rare species and will provide each student with one of her illustrated books that follows the course of study for this class. Students of all levels are welcome and each will receive individual attention and appropriate exercises.

Come enter the land of the ancient art of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. Enjoy the fascinating and intriguing art form of “dancing” with the bamboo brush in your hand moving across rice paper with Chinese ink and colors. You will learn how to hold the brush in the traditional manner to paint bamboo studies with power as if you are doing martial art. From bamboo you will paint fish swishing its tail in the water, and pine needles on branches so sharp and vigorous. Your paintings will reflect your energy and inner rhythm. Chinese calligraphy will be introduced in the first half hour to help you master the brush. It will be a fun way to learn to speak and write some Chinese words. If you are new to art you will not feel lost as each person will be given individual help in a step-by-step manner. IT is exhilarating and fun and well worth the time invested. Returned students will continue on the journey into the painting of flowers and vegetables, animals, insects, fish, landscape, people, calligraphy, acquiring more and more “dancing” strokes and expressing your love of nature and art with increasing freedom and confidence. My goal is to help each student discover and cultivate your own unique style of doing Chinese brush painting.

“Only that day dawns to which we are awake.”
—Henry David Thoreau.
Students tell me how relaxing these classes are and I have given this much thought. The drawing process can be highly meditative—expanding our awareness and enjoyment of the “here and now.” This class content is inspired by The Zen of Creativity, by John Daido Loori; Wherever You Go There You Are, by Jon Kabat-Zinn; The Art of Happiness, by The Dalai Lama; and others. This is fun and interactive. No prior experience is needed, just a desire to expand your awareness and creativity. There will be individual attention (for drawing and painting skills) for total beginners and experienced artists. In this class we will enhance our observation skills with guided drawing . . . guided seeing. We will draw and paint from nature: flowers, vines, shells, fruit, feathers, etc. arranged in novel ways to “peek the senses.” These include highlights, patterns, textures, tonal graduations, color harmonies, and more. We will create our own personal artwork to act as “visual cues” to live in the moment. By fine tuning our senses to see deeper beauty, both art and daily life become richer. This class is wonderful for reducing stress and establishing greater equanimity from within. Come and enjoy. All levels welcome.

When Picasso said that his goal was to paint like a child he was referring to the ease, joy and freedom children display when they create. With freedom of expression comes joy and the unending possibilities to create original artwork. Let’s deepen our creative experience and plunge into the world of creation with curiosity, passion and delight. Let’s explore with freedom new ideas, color combinations, forms, compositions and techniques using our favorite materials or exploring new ones. Forging ahead with challenging subjects we will add another dimension and a unique touch to our work and will expand our palette as well as our creativity. Our guides will be artists from past and present who dared to break rules and challenge existing concepts. Working from fingertips to brushes, from spontaneity to conscious decision, from known to unknown, from a single medium to mixed media we will create “outside the box” and infuse our work with the unexpected. Artists of our time do it. We will follow their lead.

Have you had some experience mixing paint but need help with your basic drawing skills? This class is designed to help bring together the fundamentals in drawing with the expressive nature of paint. In addition to the fundamentals of drawing and painting, including line, composition, value, perspective and color mixing, you will learn how to draw using a technique called sighting. Combining your drawing with paint, we will then experiment with light and its effect on color. Emphasizing expressive color, this class will teach you the techniques of glazing, washing and direct painting. Representational and abstract subject matter will be utilized. This is an opportunity to further your knowledge of color theory and to create a color palette that is all your own and revisit or improve your drawing. All levels are welcome. There is plenty of individual attention given to each student by the instructor. Appropriate for adults and teenagers.

Make felt the Tibetan way and embellish the California way! Using colorful merino wool fibers, a modernized ancient technique, some creative designing and a lot of elbow grease, you will create a beautiful, feels-so-soft felt square in class. It may not be large enough to build a yurt, but it will make a lovely wall hanging or become part of another fiber piece. Your felt will dry overnight and the next day you will create a fabulous art piece, small journal cover, pillow top or box by embellishing your own original handmade felt with hand embroidery and/or beading. During the first day, felting requires agitating the wool fibers so you will be standing for about an hour, rolling the felt with your forearms. It’s not hard! It just takes some time.

Typically, participants in Ken’s classes say they go home with “inspired clarity” about their own approach to art rather than “foreign workshop concepts” that quickly fade away. As an author of seven books on painting and drawing based on forty years of professional experience, Ken has a command of most mediums, a firm understanding of nonobjective and classical representation and an ability to demonstrate in any technique or medium appropriate to your particular challenge—regardless of individual ability. His primary interest is to help you find an artistic/ technical methodology that most closely suits his impression of your strongest direction. If you are already a practicing artist bring in your “troubled works” (duds with potential) and allow Ken to help you solve seemingly insurmountable problems that will hopefully transform them into winners (sometimes these works become the strongest paintings of all because of the struggle). If you are a beginning artist or want to improve your intermediate abilities, bring in colored or black and white photos (with strong values) or a few simple still-life objects and an extra surface for Ken to demonstrate on. Ken will get beginning artists started with time tested drawing basics and help intermediate artists find their next level. Critiques, advice, demonstrations and instruction are all individual so no one need feel under qualified. Put simply, Ken will try to help each artist find their strongest personal direction. Visit Ken’s website and blog to learn more about the artist: www.goldmanfineart.com; www.goldmanfineart.blogspot.com.

Are you the one who always says: “I would love learn how to paint, but I have no artistic talent.” Or, you’re the one who admires the detail, the light, the precision and realism of the Old Master artists, and wished you could learn to paint like that with the talents you do have? Well, YOU CAN, and this is the class for you. In this class, you will produce a masterpiece on your very first try! Using the Old Master technique is a failsafe guarantee for producing a quality painting and it takes the fear, which so many people have, out of painting with oils. I will teach you technical skills, which are easy to learn and master, and which will be able reuse over and over again as you move forward in your artistic learning. Take a blank canvas to a finished drawing using the grid method. You will bring with you to class an image YOU would like to paint. Make sure the image has good contrast of light and dark. Then you will learn how to paint in “black and white” and learn to see the light and shadow and form emerge in your painting. This is called underpainting and you will be amazed by the ease and beauty of it. Before you know it, you will be feeling very comfortable with brush in hand, and then you will be introduced to your palette of colors, and use them in the form of “glazing” over the underpainting you have worked so diligently on. Color mixing is part “feeling” and part following recipes. I will teach you those recipes and provide handouts to help you. In my class, you will never “mess up.” And you will take home a painting you will be proud of, ready for framing and a place of honor in your home!

Keeping an illustrated journal is not only a great way to chronicle your life, but also your travel adventures. Jane will teach you to sketch quickly and paint in watercolor using a straight forward intuitive approach. Everyone has their own drawing style, just like handwriting, and Jane will help you to see and then record what you see on paper. We'll be doing small journal size pages depicting the details and vignettes in our everyday lives. Materials and tools are small and minimal, and meant to be used on location. The class is geared for beginners, but all levels are welcome. (Really, even if you haven't drawn since 3rd grade, Jane can teach you!) These six weeks will get you in the journal-keeping habit, or get motivated to keep that travel journal you always promised yourself you would. Each week will be a new assignment and theme. Along the way, you'll learn some ways to spice up your journal pages with collage and mixed media with Jane supplying what you’ll need. You’ll also create small watercolor books and a portfolio for your pages.

This course will offer a structured, step-by-step workshop covering fundamental drawing concepts, beginning with drawing still life from observation, translation of three-dimensional space into the two-dimensional picture plane, and basic compositional ideas and methods. We will begin with contour line drawing, using pen and ink, and gradually develop skills and concepts such as shading, composition, and depth-of-field, using pencil and black and white pastel. We will finish the course with soft, colored pastels and an introduction to color theory. We will draw basic geometric forms, and then apply those concepts of light, shadow, and basic perspective to various types of still-life subject matter. We will work on quick sketches as well as more finished drawings. This class will provide an excellent introduction to drawing for beginning students, and will also be of interest to the more experienced student as an opportunity to learn some new techniques using a variety of black and white and color media.

In this class you will create art through a series of structured, fun and unique lessons for a greater understanding of depth and dimension. There will be individual attention for all levels (first-time beginners and experienced artists). You will learn how to make objects look more 3-dimensional, how to create scenes with greater spatial depth, plus how to “push-the-envelope” to enhance the realistic quality of any piece of art. These include highlights and shadows (3D basics), perspective and positioning (for well-grounded subjects), value contrast and tonal graduation (to make objects stand out). We will draw and paint various subjects such as: parts of the face, water lilies, clouds, hot air balloons, draped cloth, fountains, archways and more. You will learn essential elements to include in your own work. There will be handouts especially prepared for this class. You will have an opportunity to bring other art to discuss (or work on) in class to improve on depth. This class applies to all types of art: realism, impressionism and abstract art, plus any media. These lessons will give you greater confidence to draw and paint anything that comes your way.

San Diego/Park Blvd Studio
$170 member/$190 nonmember + $12 mat. fee
Materials: This class is not limited to a specific media. You may work solely with pencil or add another media of your choice: a basic set of acrylics, watercolors, pastels, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, charcoal, etc. with the appropriate papers
or surfaces for that media. Be sure to bring a drawing pad (9” x 12” or larger) or simply plenty of white paper, plus soft pencils (as 4B, 6B) and eraser. Contact Linda if you have any questions: linda@lindaluisi.com.
Break away from painting traditional subject matter. Come and explore abstract ideas that challenge and stimulate your creativity! Learn to draw and paint intuitively using elements of design, such as line, shape, form, and color. Bring your own ideas about what to paint—i.e., imagination, photos, sketches. You may paint completely nonobjective abstract work, such as shapes and colors, or use your own ideas and images based on reality. We will have a life model pose for one class meeting. Individual instruction and group critiques will guide you in measuring your progress. The longer format of this class will help students maintain continuity.

Sept. 15–Nov. 17 (10 weeks)
San Diego/Park Blvd Studio
$260 member/$310 nonmember (includes model on one day)
Materials: Bring oil and/or acrylic paints, brushes and painting palette that you already have, or contact the Athenaeum School of the Arts for details. Bring at least two canvases—either stretched or panels—to work on, minimum 14” x 17”, maximum 48” x 60” (4’ x 5’). Bring a water container for acrylics or for holding odorless solvent for oils; roll of paper towels; vine charcoal sticks or chalk pastels; one can spray fixative.

Choosing a seated pose will be part of the first class. Finding a pose that is physically possible for the model and satisfying to the artist is a challenge that can be overcome using imagination. The sculptor can capture the basics of a pose and then exaggerate or move the shapes to achieve a vision. The model then becomes a tool to use as information. Try using oil clay—it remains in a pliable state—however it cannot be kiln fired. Call Bobi to order materials: 619-922-6191. Details and email: www.sculpturehome.com.
