"All of us were read to as children...Why did it stop?"
Orpheus Speaks is a series created especially for the Athenaeum in which all the stories deal with the arts and artists in a wide variety of contexts. Stories range from rarely heard classics to very new and contemporary treasures. Write Out Loud is particularly fond of digging a forgotten gem out of its jewelry box and letting it glitter again in the light. The performances are invariably delightful, moving and amusing. One couple who attend regularly recently declared, "This is our favorite theatrical experience."
Write Out Loud, the San Diego theater troupe that specializes in bringing literature to life–aloud–describes their work as "storytime for grown-ups!" Artistic Director Veronica Murphy explains, "All of us were read to as children and we loved it. Why did it stop? We adults enjoy a good story as much as children do, maybe even more. But our needs are different. The story has to be worth our while, beautifully written and expertly presented. When those elements combine, magic ensues. In fact, it is theatrical magic at its most elemental: an actor, an audience, and a story."
