April 12
(1 day; 3 total hours of instruction)
La Jolla Studio and Athenaeum Garden
$120/140

April is the perfect month to paint the Athenaeum garden. The class will meet in the studio for a slide show; Pat will discuss mixing and using green with a limited palette and techniques used in painting botanical elements in the landscape. Then, students will paint on location in the garden surrounding the Athenaeum.

This garden is the work of John Alexander. John began work in the space in 2012. The plot is a remarkable work of art thanks to his vision and care. He selects plants that relate to the Athenaeum’s architecture and history. For instance, the Acanthus plants outside the Rotunda are the same leaves carved in relief at the top of the Corinthian columns on the portico. Olive and Italian Cypress trees are grown to honor the library’s namesake, the goddess Athena. John also includes rare specimens for the curious. He recently pointed out a flourishing double mutation of the original wild-collected poinsettia found on a friend’s travels in South America. In the spring the most intoxicating scent from the Excellenz Von Schubert roses wafts all the way to Prospect.
