Blue is the world’s favorite color. Learn how to make lovely blueprints using this historic analog photo process and bind the prints into a book using a drum leaf method of bookbinding. In this workshop, we will meet for three days, once at midday along the ocean shore, when the sun is the strongest for best exposure times for “plein air” cyanotype printing. We will gather seaweed and create several compositions. We will identify seaweed and make notes of the weather and location. In the classroom sessions, we will learn techniques of this alternative photo process. In the final session, we will bind together five prints using a drum leaf binding.
Materials: The materials fee includes a kit containing all class materials. Students are asked to bring some items of their choice: markers; white pens (white Uni-ball brand works well on cyanotype); pencils, especially white; various objects that are fairly flat, such as keys, buttons, lace, botanicals, plant leaves, flowers, tools, photo negatives, and anything that is translucent for printing.
Other things to note: For the beach classes, bring something to stay hydrated. Wear shoes or sandals suitable for walking in the sand and going in the water if you want to use the ocean in your print.
