Fabric books are lightweight and flexible—perfect for traveling or for everyday journaling at home or out and about. They are also an ideal way to repurpose used textiles and can be embellished in a number of ways, including embroidery.
In this workshop, students will make one or more side-sewn Japanese stab binding books— choosing from 4 styles of sewn bindings. Students will also design and make a small printing block and use that on a canvas book to create a multiple-block-print cover. If time allows, we will make a sewn signature book.
Re-used textiles as book pages and covers are encouraged. All levels are welcome.
Materials: Required: pencil and paper (for notes); straight edge ruler; X-Acto knife.
Materials to bring, if available (Materials will also be available in class.): Fabric that you want to work with. Medium weight natural fabrics (cotton and/or linen) are strongly recommended. Reclaimed fabric (old clothing, tablecloth, old denim, or a favorite shirt that has torn beyond repair, etc.) is encouraged If you bring the equivalent of one yard of fabric. (Bringing various pieces to choose from is encouraged.) That should be ample for making several book structures. You can bring solids or prints, but if you want to block print you may want to consider some solids. Machine or embroidery thread you want to use; lined or blank paper for making the book block, if you have paper you prefer to work with.
Tools to bring, if available (tools will also be available in class): needles to fit your threads; pins; sharp scissors; awl; cutting mat, bone folder.
Immediately after you register, look for a confirmation email and receipt. In the week preceding the class start date, you will receive another email with more details.
