101. Drawing from the Masters—Toned Paper

In this class, we will draw from classical and modern masters who worked on toned paper. By copying their work, we will learn how their use of the paper’s middle tone, along with their ability to draw with black or sanguine charcoal plus white, resulting in highly expressive three-dimensional drawings.

 

Materials: You do not need everything on this list. Buy only the supplies you’ll be working with. Strathmore 400 Series 11” x 14” grey or tan paper pad; backing board with clips; Soft Vine Charcoal, charcoal pencils-soft, medium, hard (black and/or sanguine); General’s white charcoal pencil; soft white conte crayon, blending stump, pencil sharpener or razor blade and 90 grit sandpaper (for quick sanding); kneaded eraser; Tombow Mono Zero Eraser, inexpensive brush for blending, chamois cloth.

Extra: Black and or Sanguine Pan Pastel with wand.
