Working life-size transforms the way we see, draw, and physically respond to the human figure. In this class, students will work on large sheets of paper, creating full-scale figure drawings using charcoal in stick and powdered forms. Charcoal will be explored both dry and wet, allowing students to experiment with washes, layering, lifting, erasing, blending, dripping, and unconventional mark making. We will also be working with ink using sticks to draw with. Mark making has never been so much fun.
The large format encourages students to move beyond drawing from the wrist and engage the entire arm and body, creating marks that are more confident, gestural, and expressive. While strong observational skills remain at the foundation of the class, students will be encouraged to experiment with abstraction, lost and found edges, atmosphere, texture, and the energy of the pose. Emphasis will be placed on gesture, proportion, structure, value, and composition while discovering how controlled drawing and spontaneous experimentation can work together to create powerful, personal interpretations of the figure.
