This is a fast-paced, collaborative screen-printing workshop led by artist, designer, and organizer Josh MacPhee, designed to activate printmaking as a tool for collective action. 

Josh will introduce a timely political issue, and participants will break into small teams to quickly develop a poster concept, design, burn a screen, and print a large run of posters—all within the span of the workshop. The energy is intentional and improvisational, drawing comparisons to an Iron Chef–style challenge for political posters, where speed, collaboration, and clarity of message take precedence over polish. 

Along the way, participants will learn about the history of social movement posters and the role of print in advocacy and civic engagement. The workshop emphasizes collective authorship, accessible print practices, and learning through doing. At the end of the session, the group will reflect on what was created, exchange posters, and discuss strategies for sharing and posting the work in the community. 

Josh MacPhee is a founding member of Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative and Interference Archive, a public collection of cultural materials produced by social movements. His practice centers printmaking as a democratic, participatory medium. 

No prior design or screen-printing experience is necessary. Come ready to think together, move quickly, get your hands in the ink, and make work meant to circulate. 

Suggested sliding-scale materials fee: $30–50

The event will be in person at the Athenaeum Art Center in Logan Heights. There are no physical tickets for this event. Your name will be on the attendee list at the front door. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
