*AT THE ATHENAEUM MUSIC & ARTS LIBRARY*
Don’t miss this late-breaking addition to the Athenaeum’s summer jazz schedule, a special opportunity to experience the artistry of acclaimed jazz vocalist Roberta Gambarini in an intimate duo setting with one of the West Coast’s finest pianists, Tamir Hendelman. A multi-Grammy–nominated singer, lyricist, arranger, and educator, Gambarini has been called “a true successor to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Carmen McRae” (Boston Globe).
The Italian-born vocalist burst onto the world’s jazz scene in 1998, when she became one of the top finalists in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Vocal Competition. Since then, she has enjoyed a stellar career, which has won her the love of audiences in the United States and around the world, performing in prestigious venues from Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl to jazz festivals, such as Monterey and Newport, and NYC’s Blue Note Jazz Club. She has performed, recorded, and toured extensively with many of the greatest masters of jazz, among them James Moody, Roy Hargrove, Hank Jones, Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, and the Dizzy Gillespie All Stars Big Band. She makes her Athenaeum debut in the company of award-winning jazz pianist Hendelman, known to Athenaeum audiences from his past performances with the Jeff Hamilton Trio. His other associations include the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Harry Allen, Teddy Edwards, Warren Vache, Houston Person, John Clayton, and Barbara Morrison, and his recording credits include projects with vocal stars Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand, Diana Krall, and Janis Mann.
The concert will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037). There are no physical tickets for these events. Your name will be on an attendee list at the front door. Doors open at 7 p.m. Seating is first-come; first-served. Priority seating will be given to Donor level members and above.
