Joanne Rust Stohs is an accomplished pianist, violist, and organist. She has a Master's Degree in piano performance from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor's Degree in piano and viola performance from BYU. Joanne has maintained a full piano studio since arriving in San Diego in 2005. As a pianist and violist, she collaborates with both student and professional musicians. Joanne is Principal Violist in the Poway Symphony and plays viola and piano with many other orchestras and chamber groups. She is currently the President of the Northern San Diego Branch of the Music Teachers' Association of CA (MTAC) and also serves on the State Certificate of Merit Council of MTAC.

Robert Zelickman’s career includes music performance, education, and conducting. He earned his BA at UCLA and a MFA at Cal Arts. He studied clarinet with Hugo Raimondi, Michele Zukovsky, and Ronald Rueben.

 

As faculty at UC San Diego (1983–2015), he directed the widely acclaimed Wind Ensemble with a wide repertoire and premier performances of new compositions. He lectured on Klezmer Music and the Delvelopment of the Symphony form.

 

Robert Zelickman plays clarinet with local orchestras including the San Diego Symphony when needed and the Coronado Philharmonic. He is Assistant Conductor of the Jewish Community Symphony in La Jolla. He conducts the San Diego Clarinet Society clarinet choir, and is a regular performer at the San Diego New Music Festival (soundON) at the La Jolla Anthenaeum.

Violinist/violist/conductor Alyze Dreiling, was born in Detroit, Michigan. She began her studies with Mischa Mischakoff. The Detroit Symphony and the Music Study Club of Metropolitan Detroit sponsored her education with Mischakoff. Ms. Dreiling graduated from Indiana University where she studied with Josef Gingold. She holds a BM in Violin Performance from Indiana University and MA from United States International University with an emphasis on Orchestral Performance.

Ms. Dreiling was an invited semi-finalist in the European Union Conducting Competition in 2018. She has attended masterclasses with Zoltan Rozsnyai, Gunther Neuhold,, Neil Thomson and Dr. Scott Weiss and Philip Greenberg.She has won numerous prizes from The American Prize Competition for conducting.

Ms. Dreiling is Artistic Director and Conductor of the New City Sinfonia, the Symphonic Orchestra for Civic Youth Orchestra (CYO), the North Coast Strings (NCS) and Grossmont College String Ensemble.Grossmont Symphony String Ensemble. Ms. Dreiling was also the founding Artistic Director and Conductor of Classics for Kids.

Free concerts at noon every Monday year-round . . . no wonder the Mini-Concerts are the longest-running and one of the most popular classical music series at the library! This series was founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970 at the Athenaeum, and has been going strong ever since. The concerts feature both local and touring musicians, prize-winning students, university music faculty members, local chamber ensembles. . . and the repertoire also includes jazz, folk, and world music. There are no reservations, no tickets . . . just line up at the side door of the Athenaeum before noon. (Donations are always welcome!) Mini-Concerts take place every Monday at noon and last about an hour.

The concerts will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. There are no physical tickets for these events. Doors open at 11:40 a.m. Last entry is at 12:10 p.m. or once capacity is reached. Seating is first-come; first-served. Reservations are not necessary, but seating is limited.
