The Seaside Trio, a San Diego-based professional chamber ensemble will present a recital of chamber music on Monday, November 23, 2026 at 12 PM at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library, 1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA. The trio will be performing Haydn’s Piano Trio in G major, Hob. XV:25 (“Gypsy” Trio), Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, and Café Music by Paul Schoenfield. The newly formed trio previously performed together for nine years in the Seaside Quartet and is comprised of Brenda Martin (piano), Philip Tyler (violin), and Cecilia Kim (cello).
Philip Tyler, tenured violin professor and orchestra director at PLNU, earned a doctorate in violin performance and a master’s degree in orchestral conducting, both in 1996. In addition to numerous solo recital appearances, Tyler has performed as soloist with orchestras in Oklahoma, Florida, Louisiana, and California. He frequently performs as an orchestral section player and appears in a variety of chamber ensembles. Tyler has conducted a number of orchestras in several states, including a variety of honors orchestras.
Brenda Martin, pianist holds a bachelor of science in music education from Trevecca Nazarene University, a master of music education from Austin Peay State University, and a master of music in piano performance from Arizona State University. She has also pursued studies in the Alexander Technique and jazz. Martin taught piano at the university level for 41 years, the last 25 of them at PLNU. Currently, she is a freelance musician and teacher in the San Diego area.
Cecilia Kim, cellist, earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Daegu Catholic University in Korea, where she subsequently joined the faculty. Following a series of highly acclaimed solo appearances with numerous symphonies and orchestras, she continued her studies in the United States, receiving an additional master of music degree from SDSU. She later served on the faculty at USD. A dedicated chamber musician, Kim has performed with numerous chamber ensembles and has focused much of her career on appearances throughout the Southern California region, where she is widely recognized for her artistry and collaborative excellence. 12 PM
The Athenaeum’s Mini-Concerts offer a weekly opportunity to experience live music in the intimate setting of the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Music Room. Presented every Monday at noon, the series features a diverse range of performers, from local and touring musicians to university faculty, chamber ensembles, and prize-winning students. Programs span classical music as well as jazz, folk, and world music.
Founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970, Mini-Concerts is one of the Athenaeum’s longest-running concert series. Each performance lasts approximately one hour and is free and open to the public. No reservations or tickets are required. Seating is first-come, first-served and limited.
Doors open at 11:40 a.m. and close for entry at 12:10 p.m. or when capacity is reached. Donations are welcome.
