Lawrence is a master jazz guitarist and songwriter for The Soul Jazz AllStars and Piers Lawrence Quartet based in San Diego, California.
As the founder of Jazz Net Media Inc., an independent record label, and media company, Piers has left an indelible mark on the world of jazz with his internationally acclaimed CD, Stolen Moments.
With the Piers Lawrence Quartet, he graces the stages of some of the country's most prestigious venues, from the iconic Iridium New York City and Minton's Playhouse in Harlem to the elegant Plaza Hotel (New York) and the sunlit shores of Seaport Village (San Diego). His music resonates in both intimate settings like Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar and on grand stages such as One Paseo in Del Mar, California.
Piers Lawrence's artistry extends beyond the jazz realm, with corporate clients including renowned names like Dow Jones, Billboard Magazine, IBM, Cisco Systems, the Bryant Park Jazz Festival, and even the United Nations.
Born in Manhattan and raised in San Francisco and Switzerland, Piers honed his craft at the Conservatoire de Musique de Lausanne, studying guitar and composition. His journey through the world of jazz has been enriched by collaborations with jazz legends like Barry Galbraith and Ted Dunbar and performances with the Jazz-Mobile Orchestra. On Broadway, he's contributed his musical prowess to productions of Guys and Dolls, Dancin', and Hubie.
Piers Lawrence's storied career includes touring with esteemed artists such as Wilson Pickett, Esther Phillips, Phyllis Hyman, the Caribbean Allstars and Merl Saunders. He has shared the stage and recorded with a vast array of music luminaries from Narada Michael Walden and Sammy Figueroa to Jerry Garcia and Tommy Flanagan.
Free admission. Reservations are not necessary, but seating is limited.
Concerts begin at 12 noon. Doors open at 11:50 AM. Last entry at 12:10 PM or once capacity is reached.
Free concerts at noon every Monday year-round . . . no wonder the Mini-Concerts are the longest-running and one of the most popular classical music series at the library! This series was founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970 at the Athenaeum, and has been going strong ever since. The concerts feature both local and touring musicians, prize-winning students, university music faculty members, local chamber ensembles . . . and the repertoire also includes jazz, folk, and world music. There are no reservations, no tickets . . . just line up at the side door of the Athenaeum (near the Rotunda) before noon. Seating is first-come; first-served. Mini-Concerts take place every Monday at noon and last about an hour. Donations are always welcome!
