A Contemplative Approach to Needle and Thread: This class is for beginner to advanced stitchers who have a story in mind.

If you attended the day of improvised stitch (Class 12), you are prepared for this class! If you are new to this type of practice, your creativity will be ignited by the work of other magnificent stitchers, your personal story, and your intuition. Come with an open mind and be inspired! During our time together, we will review several embroidery stitches, basic hand-turned appliqué, some surface design ideas and hand-lettering… relaxing and fun!

Whether your story is something that changed or influenced you, something about a special time, a loved one, a trip, your dog, your garden, or a poem, the subject is best if meaningful. Bring a few ideas or the project that was started in the intro workshop. This intuitive hand-stitching practice focuses on listening to our inner voice and responding with basic stitches, appliqué, and adornments.

Prerequisites: Please be able to thread a needle, tie a knot repeatedly and make a basic running stitch. It’s a bonus if you can backstitch and do a basic hand appliqué.

MATERIALS: Story ideas: Please bring a few story idea options.

Fabrics: a linen or cotton garment,* vintage tablecloth or napkins, and a few fabric scraps. The looser the weave the easier to stitch.

Tools and accessories: a needle or two, embroidery thread, sharp scissors. The instructor will bring samples, additional threads, tools, fabric scraps, and stitch-sample books. Bring a few options so you can work on a project. Nancy will have scraps, thread and floss, and a few bits to share, as well as examples on hand, and will demonstrate her techniques.

*Please note: Denim can be too thick and hard to work with. The best fabric is linen, low-thread-count cotton, or something used or vintage. If you want to stitch on knit fabrics (T-shirt type), that is also an option
