In these sessions we will explore Pleinair Collage and Notan / Shape Expansion, creating art pieces, using texture, color, text & imagery from magazines as our source medium, and combining the traditional techniques of cut and paste.
DAY 1—Pleinair Collage
Process: Class will start by exploring the grounds, structure & landscape around the ATHENAEUM LIBRARY, finding interesting views, building angles, scenes, etc. to make initial, small, rough sketches and taking phone pics for color reference to create compositions. After some creative discussion
of ideas and which idea/s might be a good direction to head in, we will transfer the idea onto bigger paper, and with very faint guide lines map out the basic shapes and forms, then proceed to block/fill in with collage materials selected from magazines, creating your own unique interpretations.
DAY 2—Notan / Shape Expansion / Collage
NOTAN is a Japanese design concept meaning “dark-light”, focusing on the harmonious balance between light and dark elements in art and composition. It emphasizes the interaction between positive and negative shapes, often using only black & white to create, study, or analyze the structure of a design/composition.
Process: We will explore creating compositions using black & white, color paper and various found magazine textures.
WHAT WE WILL USE:
Paper, Paint, Crayon, Oil pastels, Stamps, found imagery/text, (from magazines)
HOW WE WILL USE IT:
Painting, Cutting, Tearing, Sticking, Gluing, Stamping, Creating!
Max students: 18
