In this two-day workshop we will be focusing on learning a variety of ways to paint in a loose and easy style with pen and watercolor. For part of the second day, we will use our skills to draw outside as we walk through La Jolla. I will have an easy-to-follow plan for each stop. We will be drawing and painting in an accordion style “sketchbook” that will be furnished.
We will capture the feel of La Jolla in quick, bite-sized pieces. It’s a great technique to use for travel when you don’t always have a full hour or so to sit in one spot. You will use thick and thin lines, overlap, and varied scale, and I will show different ways of applying paint. You will also learn easy ways to add lettering. I will show how to use simple design elements that will tie the whole piece together.
This class is set at an intermediate level. You should have some experience with drawing and painting before taking this class.
MATERIALS: Pens: I recommend Faber-Castell PITT or Micron waterproof, black. There’s a pack of four Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pens that has nib sizes superfine, fine, medium, and brush-pen. If you have a variety of nib sizes in another brand of acid free, waterproof pens, feel free to use them. (Note: Be sure it is not the four-pack that has thick pens used for calligraphy.)
Paper: one 9" x 12" watercolor pad. (From 90 lb. to 140 lb. is good. My favorite brand is Arches, cold or hot press, but others are fine.) I will supply an accordion fold “sketchbook.” They are $4, and you can pay me in class.
Watercolor: If you have watercolors, just use what you have. If you want to buy some, you can get the Prang-brand, 16-standard-color set or splurge and buy tubes of Daniel Smith or Winsor & Newton. If you want a set for travel, get a travel Winsor & Newton set, with professional colors.
Brushes: The sets usually come with a brush. I recommend that you get additional brushes (round #2, 6, and 8) and a flat, wash brush (1/2"). Feel free to set up any pens or paper you would like to try. If you would like to get a travel water brush, Niji is the best brand: https://www.amazon.com/Yasutomo-Waterbrush-Small-Medium-Pieces/dp/B09TGB7YPV
Misc.: Water container. (If you do not have a travel water paintbrush you will want a small container of water for when we are painting outdoors.) If you do not have a small travel pallet you can use an inexpensive Prang watercolor set, available at Walmart or any office supply store.
Optional: One Uni-Bal Signo white fine-tip pen or white gel pen. Small, lightweight folding chair for when we are outside. Niji travel paintbrush: https://www.amazon.com/Yasutomo-Waterbrush-Small-Medium-Pieces/dp/B09TGB7YPV. Sun hat and sunscreen for when we will be outside on Sunday. Small clipboard. We will be drawing sometimes while standing, and the clipboard could be helpful. Or you could just use a piece of cardboard and a clip.
Max students: 13
