This three-hour workshop with Jonathan Parker centers on drawing and painting as a process of discovery rather than technical mastery. Participants are guided through a progression of exercises that move from collaborative play toward individual exploration, encouraging openness, intuition, and responsiveness to materials.

Experience an intimate evening with Ana María Herrera, the renowned multidisciplinary artist behind Layered Memories, currently on exhibit at the Athenaeum Art Center. Please join us for an artist talk by Columbus, Ohio–based interdisciplinary artist Michael Mercil. Exploring realms of “the near, the low, the common,” Mercil’s work recontextualizes culturally significant reference material through dynamic multimedia compositions. His practice incorporates an expansive use of many mediums, including drawing, painting, needlepoint, sculpture, landscape architecture, film, performance, teaching, and farming. Mercil will share a special presentation of his career, process, recent projects, and 2023 mural for Murals of La Jolla, ART IS GOOD FOR YOU on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. The reception at 6 p.m. will be followed by a lecture at 6:30 p.m.
Inspired by the blue cast of twilight, Anne Labovitz will present illuminated pieces, sculptural artists' books, and colorful, immersive works to interact with visitors, exploring a state of calmness, emergent energy, and feeling. Her work responds to today’s world by challenging isolation, loneliness and disconnection through activating color and light in large-scale works. Local context and creating connections with others is embodied in the artist's creative process and public interventions.
Please join us for an artist talk by Jean Lowe, San Diego-based multimedia artist. Lowe will unpack some of the humor, social critique, and rage that is threaded through her work regardless of form—with an emphasis on new video pieces made in collaboration with Lile Kvantaliani. These short skits borrow from reality shows such as Selling Sunset, Love is Blind, and cooking shows. She will be debuting her video episode Love is Blind: Boomer Edition as a part of her lecture, along with a variety of other unrelated short skits, situated within her overarching oeuvre.
