The series opens on Sunday, June 14, with a local debut by the Rodriguez Brothers Quintet, who will play their own Afro-Cuban in honor of Miles Davis’s 100th birthday. Davis constantly pushed boundaries and absorbed global traditions. In this heartfelt tribute, the Rodriguez Brothers carry the tradition forward, reinterpreting the legend’s iconic works through today’s Afro-Cuban jazz language—blending Havana’s rhythmic fire with the spirit of innovation that Davis embodied. The band features brothers Michael Rodriguez on trumpet and Robert Rodriguez on piano, Carlitos Del Puerto on bass, Jimmy MacBride on drums, and Luis Conte on percussion.

The series continues Sunday, June 21, at the Athenaeum with a local debut by the duo of Emilio Solla and Antonio Lizana. Latin Grammy–winner and six-time Grammy nominee, Argentina-born and New York–based pianist, composer, and arranger Solla teams up for his 15th album with rising-star Spanish flamenco-jazz vocalist and saxophonist Lizana. Together they have created a highly original album, El Siempre Mar, where old Argentine folk songs by foundational composers, such as Atahualpa Yupanqui and Astor Piazzolla, live together with original compositions from both Solla and Lizano. In this new take on the cantes de ida y vuelta (“roundtrip songs”), these two artists have managed to find a unique and contemporary meeting point between the music of Argentina, the south of Spain, and jazz.

The series concludes on June 21 with the return of the Melissa Aldana Quartet, with Aldana on tenor sax, Glenn Zaleski on piano, Pablo Menares on bass, and Kush Abadey on drums. Aldana’s last Athenaeum performance was in March 2020, when she played music from her album Visions for Frida Kahlo, which earned her a first-ever GRAMMY nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo. Her program this June will feature music from her 2024 release on Blue Note Records, Echoes of the Inner Prophet. A native of Chile, Aldana moved to the United States to attend Berklee College of Music. In 2013, at age 24, she became the first female instrumentalist and the first South American musician to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition.

June 16 (at Scripps Research) features the all-star duo of bassist Dave Holland and Lionel Loueke on guitar and voice, playing music from their forthcoming release, United. Holland makes a long-awaited return to the Athenaeum series, having last performed at the Scripps Research Hall in 2007. Holland’s passion for musical expression of all styles has propelled a career of more than 50 years and earned him top honors, including multiple GRAMMY awards and the title of NEA Jazz Master in 2017. His virtuosic technique and rhythmic feel are widely revered and in much demand. To date, his playing can be heard on hundreds of recordings, with more than 30 as a leader under his own name. Loueke last appeared at the library in summer 2023. A native of Benin, he came to the United States on a scholarship to Berklee College of Music and from there gained acceptance to the Thelonious Monk [now Herbie Hancock] Institute of Jazz in Los Angeles. Praised by his mentor Hancock as “a musical painter,” Loueke combines harmonic sophistication, soaring melody, and conventional and extended guitar techniques to create a warm and evocative sound of his own.

The series continues on June 11 with former San Diego residents vocalist Gillian Margot and Geoffrey Keezer (piano), featuring music from their eponymous new duo album. For this Athenaeum date, they are joined by Ben Williams on bass and San Diego jazz hero Peter Sprague on guitar. With an exquisite voice, a disarmingly wide vocal range, and a style that is deeply rooted in the tradition of the great jazz vocalists, Margot possesses a gift of storytelling and stunning lyrical delivery. A native of Toronto, Canada, Margot studied under a generation of jazz legends including Oscar Peterson, Freddy Cole, Carol Welsman, and Norman Simmons. Keezer is a GRAMMY-winning pianist, composer, arranger, and producer based in New York City, where he first moved in 1989 to become the final pianist with the legendary Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Keezer has toured and recorded with a galaxy of stars including Ray Brown, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Sting, and Christian McBride.

The series begins on June 5 with the Sasha Berliner Quartet, featuring Berliner on vibraphone, Javier Santiago on piano, Max Gerl on bass, and Myles Martin on drums. Berliner, who made her Athenaeum debut last fall with bassist Ben Williams, returns as the leader of her own band with music from her March 2025 release, Fantôme. Named winner of the 2020 DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star—Vibraphone category, she was both the first woman, and at 21, the youngest individual in the poll’s history to receive the award. She has been voted one of the top 10 vibraphonists in DownBeat Readers Poll every year since 2021. Sasha has headlined venues like the Newport Jazz Festival, The Blue Note, Montreal Jazz Festival, and Monterey Jazz Festival and has recorded and performed with such renowned musicians as Tyshawn Sorey, Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, and Cecile McLorin Salvant.

The series continues Sunday, January 28, with the San Diego debut of NYC-based jazz guitar phenomenon Gilad Hekselman, with bassist David Robaire and drummer JK Kim. Israeli-born Hekselman has shared the stage with some of the greatest artists in jazz, including John Scofield, Danilo Perez, Anat Cohen, and Esperanza Spalding. He has played all the major clubs in New York and has toured the world’s most noteworthy jazz festivals. In 2005, Gilad won the Gibson Montreux International Guitar Competition, opening for guitar legend Paco de Lucia at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In 2017, Gilad placed first in the Rising Star guitarist category in DownBeat magazine. In 2018 another guitar legend, Pat Metheny, invited Gilad to perform for his NEA Jazz Master Award ceremony at the Kennedy Center. In 2019 he led his own quartet for a week’s run at NYC’s legendary Village Vanguard, the world’s most prestigious jazz venue.

Oh’s past Athenaeum appearances have been with her own quartet (2017), with her husband Fabian Almazan’s trio (2019), and with the Dave Douglas-Joe Lovano Soundprints band (2014). In addition to her work with Lovano and Douglas, Oh has performed with the likes of Steve Wilson, Vijay Iyer, Kenny Barron, Geri Allen, and Terri Lyne Carrington. She is currently the bassist with guitarist Pat Metheny. She is the recipient of the 2023 Herb Alpert Award in the Arts.

Wednesday, October 12, brings the latest incarnation of the renowned cooperative band, The Bad Plus, featuring original members, bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King, plus guitarist Ben Monder and tenor saxophonist Chris Speed. The Bad Plus originally came together 21 years ago and has avoided easy categorization ever since, winning critical hosannas and a legion of fans worldwide with their creativity, unique sound, and flair for live performance. The intensely collaborative band has constantly searched for rules to break and boundaries to cross, bridging genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of exceptional musicians working in perfect sync.

The series opens on Thursday, September 29, with the Willie Jones III Quintet, an all-star ensemble featuring Jones on drums, past Tonight Show Band member Ralph Moore on tenor sax, San Diego’s own Gilbert Castellanos on trumpet, Sam Hirsh on piano, and Luca Alemanno on bass. Jones’ association with the Athenaeum goes back to 1995, when he first appeared at the library in the stellar collective Black Note alongside longtime friend Castellanos.

The series concludes with the Jenny Scheinman Quintet. Scheinman is a singer, fiddle player, and songwriter. She makes a return visit to Athenaeum, having performed in summer 2019 with Parlour Game, co-led with Allison Miller. She has been on numerous Grammy-winning recordings and has been one of the top violinists in the DownBeat Critics Poll for over a decade.

The series continues with a two-piano performance by Mike Wofford and Josh Nelson. This concert is a special tribute to Athenaeum Executive Director Erika Torri on the eve of her retirement after 33 years at the library. Under her leadership the Athenaeum Jazz series has grown and flourished for the past three decades, beginning with the first concerts in the summer of 1989, which included Wofford.

The series continues with the Joel Frahm Trio, featuring Frahm on tenor saxophone, Dan Loomis on bass, and Ernesto Cervini on drums. For more than 30 years, Frahm lived in New York City, working in jazz clubs, collaborating with other musicians, and honing his craft. He now lives in Nashville, where he continues to play the music he loves. His bold, inventive tenor sound has won fans in the United States and across the world.
