Artists’ books are made to move—to touch and to turn. These moveable books are exceptionally interactive, inviting the viewer in. We will construct one or more house “pop-ups.” Then, we will continue exploring the action inherent in books with flexagons. Constructed by folding strips of paper, flexagons can be flexed or folded in certain ways to reveal hidden faces—faces that were originally on the back or inside. Some are continuous—you can keep folding and flipping, reflecting the theme of the movie Groundhog Day. Others change shape as they fold, unfold, turn, and refold, ideal for a short narrative story.

All levels are welcome.

Materials: Choice of papers for the projects are provided. Students should bring basic tools listed here: Cutting knife, stylus (for scoring), sharp pencils, a good eraser (Pink Pearl is good), glue (UHU glue stick or a small container of PVA & brush), ruler, scissors.

Optional/recommended: Plastic centering ruler (e.g., 2” x 12” C-Thru), bench hook with cutting mat (9” x 12” cutting mat size is ideal), bone folder.
