Barbara & William Karatz Chamber Series

30th Anniversary Season, 2019–2020

The Athenaeum is happy to announce the new 2019–2020 season of the Barbara & William Karatz Chamber Series!

Enjoy chamber music as it was intended—in a warm, intimate setting, where you are treated as a guest in our historic home. All concerts are followed by a private reception with the artists in the Sharon and Joel Labovitz Foyer. At an Athenaeum chamber concert you’ll experience passionate, committed performances in San Diego’s most intimate classical music venue. Our programming philosophy is simple: on any concert you’ll hear music rarely presented locally as well as masterpieces guaranteed to enrich and move you.

This season abounds with important anniversaries! We’ll celebrate the 200th anniversary of Clara Schumann’s birth with a concert of her compositions, and the 100th anniversary of the remarkable Galina Ustvolskaya, whose intense spiritual music was neglected by the Soviets but performed outside the USSR to great acclaim. Our first concert features her early Trio, and our last concert includes two of her powerful piano sonatas. African American composer Florence Price is enjoying a renaissance, partly due to the discovery of manuscripts of works long thought lost. We’ll hear one of these, her Piano Concerto, along with her adaptations of spirituals for string quartet. The year 2020 marks the 250th birthday of Beethoven, and we’ll hear three of his string quartets played by the Maxwell, Thalea, and Vera Quartets.

Pre-concert lectures by musicologist Charissa Noble, Ph.D., begin at 6:30 PM. At the end of each concert you can mingle with the musicians at our post-concert wine and cheese reception in the Sharon and Joel Labovitz Foyer. Join us!

These concerts are made possible in part, thanks to funding from the City of San Diego through a program managed by the Commission for Arts and Culture and the County of San Diego.
