ATHENAEUM STUDENT EXHIBITION AT THE YMCA

The Evolving Artist: Work by Jeff Yeomans and his Athenaeum Painting Students
April 19–21, 2024
Opening Reception: Friday, April 19, 2024, 4–7 PM

A series of paintings by Athenaeum faculty member Jeff Yeomans and his Athenaeum painting students will be on display at the Shepherd YMCA Firehouse, 7877 Herschel Avenue, La Jolla. The works will be on display on Saturday, April 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Sunday, April 21 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. In addition to Jeff Yeomans, the artists on display include Jane Allen, Bill Beck, Linda Bussi, Alison Calta, Dawn Douglas, Ron Erickson, Karen Fonseca, Brent Jacobs, Sue Knop, Patty Raymond, Heather Shorack, and Valorie Thompson.

They are a group of painters that became better friends during COVID lockdown via Zoom classes. They started as a simple Thursday Athenaeum class. After painting for several years together, they found themselves cut off by COVID, unable to meet in person. As a result, they saw a glimpse into each other’s homes and shared their lives, health, and family events.

In an unpredictable, difficult time, they laughed and learned and encouraged each other—like everyone else did—just to get through COVID.

These paintings are evidence of their growth and shared creative energy—then and now. Each painting has a backstory, and they hope something you see there will trigger a memory, feeling, reaction, or, even better, a good conversation. It’s what art should do.

A desire to paint brought them together, continues to nourish them, and keeps them connected and grateful.
