22. Plein Air Techniques: Drawing and Painting The Figure In The Landscape

In this one-day workshop students will have the opportunity to learn more about plein air technique and painting the figure outdoors.

We will paint from a live model on location in the Athenaeum Garden. Students are also welcome to draw from the model if they prefer.

Materials: Portable easel; Compose it 6-in 1 Grid, several 6x8 or 8x10 canvas boards; half dozen brushes; Robert Simmons natural bristle flat # 40F, size 2,3, 4, and six. A small, pointed sable brush for detail. One small steel palette knife; Gamsol odorless solvent, small cup, or container, 12x16” wooden palette.

Oil paints: Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Lemon, Pthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White (large tube,) Cadmium orange.

* Buy only pure cadmium colors/not hues.

Paper towels, Sun hat, old shirt.

If you choose to draw the model:

Materials: Drawing board; paper or sketchbook; graphite; eraser; vine charcoal; charcoal pencils. Drawing benches are available in the studio.
