“Music is important to me because it’s a creative outlet. It’s important that we emphasize the arts here at USD because art is for everyone, no matter what your major is. Art, whether it be performance, graphic, visual, etc. is essential to who we are as human beings; ‘survival is insufficient.’”
(USD Student Media, October 2021)

Gabriel de Guzman, San Diego State University

“Writing music since his Freshman year of high school, Gabriel De Guzman has written works spanning from small ensembles to symphonic orchestras. De Guzman mainly writes for wind ensembles and orchestras, as well as working with electronic music and musical production.

Under the alias, SugarBagels, De Guzman started uploading his music on scratch.mit.edu in 2018. Many Scratch users utilized his music in their projects.

After two years of uploading his music on Scratch, De Guzman started writing more expansive pieces for wind and string instruments and continues to compose and produce music to this day.

De Guzman graduated from Vista Murrieta High School in 2021 and is currently pursuing a degree in Global Composition at San Diego State University.”

Georgia Phipps, Palomar College

“When we are composing, the best part of the concert is getting other musicians to play our pieces so that we can hear them outside of our computers and outside of ourselves playing them.”
(The Telescope, Palomar College, May 2021)

Tristan Shin, MIT/Canyon Crest Academy

“I'm Tristan Shin. I'm currently an undergraduate at MIT, planning on studying music (course 21M) and math (course 18) with a minor in computer science.”

Julianna Zheng, University of San Diego

“Women have such unique perspectives and it’s so important to have a platform to show how we feel—which is why I’m pursuing music composition,” Zheng said. “You just have to tell yourself to do it and disregard gender because people will notice your hard work and the art’s passion will speak for itself.”

San Diego New Music is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the public performance of notated music of the highest integrity and artistic caliber from the 20th and 21st centuries. We seek to advance the art form by promoting music composed with conceptual rigor, passionate energy and singular artistic vision. SDNM enriches the artistic culture of San Diego through the presentation of an annual concert series and the soundON Festival of Modern Music, and through fostering its resident performing ensemble, NOISE.

In 1994, the only place in San Diego where you could hear an entire concert of 20th-century music was on a college campus. San Diego New Music pitched the idea of a concert series devoted to modern music and 20th-century classics at the Athenaeum. The concerts of modern music perfectly complement the exhibitions of modern art held in the Athenaeum’s galleries. In 1996, San Diego New Music presented its first season. The series was called "Noise at the Library," and the ensemble would later adopt the name, as well.

San Diego New Music and the Athenaeum have been happily co-presenting concerts of new music ever since.
