WILLIAM WEGMAN

Field Guide to North America (and other regions)

April 28–June 6, 1992

The Athenaeum presented the first fine-art book by William Wegman, an internationally recognized, New York-based artist. Published by The Lapis Press, Los Angeles in an edition of fifteen, the 36-page book included drawings, watercolors, hand-written text, collaged elements, black-and-white and color photographs and one painting on canvas. The contents of the book were a combination of camper’s scrapbook, naturalist’s collection of notations about nature and the forest, a record of things a Boy Scout might keep, and memorabilia that could be picked up on a camping trip.
