Letters from the Spirit: The art of calligraphy

December 11, 1993–January 29, 1994

This exhibition of the art of calligraphy included works by more than ten well-known calligraphers illustrating the marvels of the human spirit as manifested in this art form. Calligraphy is defined in the oldest English dictionaries as “the art of producing elegant handwriting.” Today, computer technology enables us to reproduce countless typefaces in infinite sizes almost instantly. This effortless access to “perfect” printing ironically inspires us to cherish more than ever the evolution and power of the hand-drawn, hand-lettered, handwritten product of human skill and vision. This exhibition presented an eclectic survey of the varied traditions in calligraphy and featured works by San Diego-based artists Judythe Sieck, Lloyd Kirkpatrick, Eileen Boniecka, and James Nocito. Other noted artists in the exhibition came from across America as well as from England, Ireland, and Turkey, including Susan Skarsgard, Jane Dill, Patricia Lovett, Yusuf Sezer, and David McGrail.
