The Gardens of Le Notre: Photographs by Becky Cohen

April 15–June 3, 1995

San Diego-based artist and photographer Becky Cohen presented an installation of black-and-white photographs, representing current work in process of a collaboration between Cohen and UCSD Professor of Communications Chandra Mukerji. Professor Mukerji recently completed text for a book entitled At the Gardens of Versailles: Experiments in Power for the Territorial State, published in 1996 by Cambridge University Press. Between 1993 and 1995, Cohen made four trips to France, photographing the gardens at Versailles, Vaux-le-Vicomte, Sceaux, St. Cloud, Marly-le-Roi, and Saint Germain-en-Laye. Cohen’s task in the field was to envision Mukerji’s historical argument, providing an artist’s representation that revealed the militaristic orchestration of the gardens.
