Intermezzo: Arbeiten auf Papier/ works on paper

June 15–July 20, 1996

The Athenaeum presented the first U.S. showing of works by Berlin artist Rolf Händler. Larger works in watercolor, acrylic, and the print medium were presented along with the artist’s Briefübermalungen, paintings on envelopes that have been received through the mail and which incorporate the envelope’s stamp, cancellation mark, and address. Themes of his work included the Mauerbilder, or wall paintings (documenting the candlelight vigils that were held in East Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989), musical instruments and concerts, and portraits.
