A Place to Begin/Un lugar para empezar: An exhibition of inSITE2000 project proposals

September 29–November 25, 2000

The Athenaeum again presented an exhibition of proposals by artists developing projects for inSITE2000, a bi-national cultural project between Mexico and the U.S. inSITE, which takes place every three years, is a collaborative project of non-profit and public cultural institutions in the two countries. The exhibition included proposals by the 32 participating artists: Carlos Amorales, Gustavo Artigas, Judith Barry, Geneviéve Cadieux, Jordan Crandall, Arturo Cuenca, Mauricio Dias and Waltre Riedwig, Mark Dion, Rita González and Norma Iglesias, Silvia Gruner, Diego Gutiérrez, Alfredo Jaar, Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid, Alberto Caro Limón, Iñigo Mangland-Ovalle, Allan McCollum, Mônica Nador, Ugo Palavicino, Jorge Pardo, Héctor Pérez, Armando Rascón, Roman de Salvo, Lorna Simpson, Valeska Soares, Meyer Vaisman, Jeffrey Vallance, Glen Wilson, and Krzysztof Wodczko. The proposals took a variety of forms, reflecting the experimental nature of the projects and the creative working processes of each artist. Proposal materials included initial sketches, photographs of potential sites, Photoshop images of their ideas, as well as influential videos, objects, and texts. These materials were displayed in a casual manner, pinned onto the wall, set on shelves and tables, to create a workshop atmosphere.
