HARRY STERNBERG

1904–2001: A Celebration of his Life

June 15–July 27, 2002

Painter, printmaker, teacher, author, political activist, icon and beloved friend of the Athenaeum, Harry Sternberg died on November 27, 2001. The Athenaeum held a posthumous exhibition in honor of Harry Sternberg, giving his countless friends and collectors yet another opportunity to view his work, and celebrate his life as an artist. The exhibition included many works, both paintings and prints, that had never been shown before. Particular focus was on Harry’s landscapes, especially those of California and the desert. There was also a series of paintings of flowers; and a series of prints of musical instruments; both of these have never been shown. Harry’s paintings in a religious theme—also rarely exhibited—were included, as were some of his later self-portraits.
