DAVID FOBES

Code-O-Chromes

May 14–June 18, 2011

Nearly all of the seventeen pieces in this exhibition of new work by David Fobes (aka Misterfobes) consist of paintings/constructions of colorful geometric designs made with vinyl (duct) and cloth tape on sheet metal, a practice begun by the artist in 2006. The chief exception is painting is dead, PAINTING IS DEAD! which -- in black, white, and gray -- reminds the viewer of barcodes. Fobe’s interest in the perception of color combines here with his exploration of “themes of ‘twinness,’ spiritual transition, extreme craft, anxieties of the unseen and misperception.” Fobes himself is an identical twin, an artist, and an educator. He has a BA in art, an MFA in furniture design, and has taught locally at San Diego Mesa College and the School of Art + Design at San Diego State University.
