2010 SAN DIEGO ART PRIZE RECIPIENTS

Jamex and Einar de la Torre with Julio Orozco: ho-yee’-tah (joyita/small jewel)

April 2–May 7, 2011

For the first time, the Athenaeum collaborates with the San Diego Art Prize Committee to exhibit the work of the prize recipients. Jamex and Einar de la Torre studied at California State University at Long Beach, where Jamex received a BFA in sculpture. Their work here consists of nine large mixed media works and two works in their signature blown glass and mixed media. Especially striking is the three-panel piece titled El cakeito-El cuarto nivel depicting rows of colorful cakes stretching in either direction from a central figure. Related to the show’s title, but spelled differently, is hoo-yee taah #1 by Julio Orozco, a digital print on wood. Orozco also presents work from his cinema project, which began in 1992, documenting Tijuana cinemas.
