MATTHEW HEBERT

Cover to Cover (On Loan from the Collection)

January 11–February 15, 2014

Hebert presents a new body of work that draws inspiration from the artists’ books in the Athenaeum’s collection and provides sculptural interventions with lighting, motion, and sound throughout the library. The work in Cover to Cover largely takes the form of “empty” pedestals emphasizing the “missing” art object that, upon closer inspection and interaction, reveal the pedestals themselves to be that object. In addition, Hebert exhibits six Opaque Displays -- sculptural objects that house mechanical dioramas depicting works of post-minimalist Art. The artist, currently Associate Professor of Furniture at San Diego State University, received his BA in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley and his MFA from California College of the Arts.
