ALEXIS SMITH

Chandlerisms

June 20–July 25, 2015

The installation presents quotes that the prominent artist Alexis Smith has collected since 1978 from the noir 1930s mystery novelist and screenwriter Raymond Chandler, who spent his final years in La Jolla. Large black vinyl quotes wrap the white walls of the gallery from floor to ceiling. There are a few artworks, as well, including Chandlerism #172 (2014), a reproduced photo image (found in a trash can) of Marilyn Monroe accompanied by the Chandler quote: “She handed me the glass. Bubbles rose in it like false hopes. ‘To all the dumb dreams that never happen.’” Smith is the artist for the 2015–2016 Athenaeum concert program cover. She holds a BA from University of California, Irvine and is represented in the University of California, San Diego’s Stuart Collection of outdoor art.
