Recent Acquisitions to the Athenaeum’s Collection

September 23–November 4, 2017

Five artworks by Ernie Silva (1948-2014), including drawing, painting and sculpture and recently donated to the Athenaeum’s Permanent Collection by Lucille and Ron Neeley, are on view in the Rotunda Gallery.  Silva considered himself a visual poet; he created lyrical dreamscapes with images of figures, animals, elements of the natural world and common objects. Silva had a 30-year teaching career at the University of California, San Diego and was professor emeritus of visual arts at the time of his death.  He earned his BFA from University of Rhode Island, Kingston, and his MFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia. The Athenaeum previously presented exhibitions of Silva’s work in 1997, 2004 and 2015.
