ANTONIO ADRIANO PULEO

In and In-between (dentro e in mezzo)

February 17–March 24, 2018

Antonio Adriano Puleo presents a series of collages, paintings, and sculpture. Inspired by the cutouts of Henri Matisse and the collages of Robert Motherwell, Puleo’s current work investigates the “space in and in-between artworks”. He arranges shape and form (a lexicon that Puleo has been developing since 2009), informed by negative spaces of previous works. The artist finishes the collages by working in a layer of oil paint onto the surface, fracturing and fragmenting the space in the works further. Born in Boston and now living and working in Los Angeles, Puleo received his Master’s of Fine Arts degree from the University of California Los Angeles in 2003. This exhibition is funded in part by grants from the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and the County of San Diego. The mixed-media artwork, Untitled, 2018, was purchased with funds from the Art Committee: Athenaeum Permanent Collection 2018.05. The silkscreen print, Untitled, 2018, was commissioned for the 2018 Patron Gift: Athenaeum Permanent Collection 2018.10.
