SELECTIONS FROM THE FRED & ERIKA TORRI ATHENAEUM ARTISTS’ BOOKS COLLECTION

A Celebration of Sol LeWitt and Printed Matter

July 20–August 24, 2019

Born in 1928 to Russian immigrant parents, LeWitt began his art training as a youngster at the Wadsworth Athenaeum in his hometown, Hartford, Connecticut. After receiving a BFA from Syracuse, he moved to New York City to further his studies. He worked for emerging architect I.M. Pei, and in the 1970s, he became one of the founders of Printed Matter, a publisher in the forefront of promoting artists’ books. In honor of Sol LeWitt’s many statements about conceptual art (including his coinage of the phrase), we include a piece by John Baldessari entitled Baldessari Sings LeWitt!
