The Athenaeum's outdoor movie series, "Flicks on the Bricks" makes it possible for you to enjoy classic movies that you love while enjoying the beautiful summer night on the patio of the Athenaeum.
The Athenaeum’s popular film series, Flicks on the Bricks, returns in August for its 14th year. Guests are invited to join us on the outdoor patio for balmy summer nights and screenings of classic cinema al fresco. Series tickets for the open-air theater include three memorable films. This year, the film series will again be curated and presented by KPBS film critic Beth Accomando and writer D. A. Kolodenko, who curated our 2018 series “San Diego Film Noir.”
This summer, our focus on vintage crime and mystery continues with La Jollans of Noir: Vintage Crime Thrillers Starring Actors with a La Jolla Connection. The three films we’re featuring are: Underworld USA (1961)—starring Cliff Robertson, La Jolla born and raised; Mirage (1965)—starring Gregory Peck, La Jolla born and raised; and Sudden Fear (1952)—starring Joan Crawford, who had a vacation residence in La Jolla.
Accomando is currently in the midst of hosting a yearlong noir film series at Digital Gym Cinema featuring the exciting films of “pre-code” 1930s Hollywood. The series is programmed by Film Geeks SD and screens a classic pre-code film one Sunday a month. Kolodenko’s article about Graham Greene will be featured this year in Noir City Magazine. He is currently working on a biography of Los Angeles novelist and screenwriter Marty Holland.
Brush up on your TRIVIA as there will be PRIZES and GIVEAWAYS at each screening.
