May is a big month for film festivals in San Diego, though sometimes I wonder if I could say that any month and still be correct. I've also been wondering: will this be our last season of streaming, at-home film festivals? San Diego International Film Festival hosts its ShortsFest this weekend, the San Diego Film Awards will be held on Friday and the GI Film Festival San Diego kicks off on Tuesday (see my feature below).

 

Maybe it's the Athenaeum's new exhibition "Marking Time" that has me reflecting on the fact that despite the pandemic's seeming endlessness, this [gestures broadly] whole experience is time capsule-worthy and therefore finite — lockdown, virtual art, streaming film fests, languishing (OK that might stick around), vaccine appointment bots, you name it. Check out this weekend's arts preview to learn about that exhibition: dozens of notable contemporary artists and the works they've made during the pandemic at the Athenaeum. Plus, two musical ensembles will finally get their chance to perform for live audiences again.
