American Art Pottery 1900–1930: Selections from San Diego Collections

February 23–April 3, 1993

Art Pottery refers to a type of ceramics created between approximately 1870 and 1930. Closely associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement which originated in England and fostered the marriage of industry, art, and craft, this art form was based on the premise that a decorative yet functional artwork could be created through the combined efforts of many hands within a commercial organization. The Art Pottery Movement contributed significantly to the history of art in America over a span of 50 years; the movement led to the development of numerous technical and decorative achievements and redefined the role of ceramics in the fine and decorative arts. Over 20 ceramic pieces from noted potteries such as Weller, Van Briggle, Roseville, and Grueby were included in this exhibition.
