GEORG EISLER

Paintings and Book Illustrations

February 17–March 24, 2007

Austrian artist Georg Eisler (1928–1998) was a noted figurative painter at a time when European art was moving toward the abstract. He received training under the Austrian Expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka and was a prolific artist and book illustrator. His work was included in the 1982 Venice Biennale, and he designed sets and costumes for a production at London’s Royal Opera House. Many of the works in the exhibition were on loan from the artist’s widow Dr. Alice Gerson Eisler who lives in Vienna, and from local private collector Martin Breslauer.
