Column: San Diego artist Diana Benavídez's piñatas are filled with meaning

There are many practical reasons why artist Diana Benavídez works with piñatas. They reflect the binational heritage of a kid raised in Tijuana and Chula Vista. The materials — cardboard, tissue paper, newspapers, the odd balloon — are affordable for a young artist on a day-job budget. She can make them in her studio apartment, no special tools required.
But what she loves about piñatas is how much they can hold. Even when they are technically empty.
