In his own country, in his lifetime, Edvard Grieg struggled for recognition. Even though he had studied with the foremost Nordic composer of the previous generation — the Danish master Niels Gade — Grieg had left the north for additional training in Germany. This was a transgression his compatriots found hard to overlook.
